Hanna Somatic Education
(HSE or Hanna Somatics) is a unique brain to muscle re-education. Through specific movements, muscles are reprogrammed to relieve tension, improve range of motion, and regain strength and control.

Hanna Somatics is an exceptionally effective modality to eliminate ongoing pain in all parts of the body including the back, neck, shoulder, hips, and legs. Many clients experiencing pain from car accidents, sports injuries, or overuse have reported pain relief after the first session. Some clients report that Hanna Somatics has provided pain relief and increased range of motion where traditional physical therapy has failed.
In 1996, Dr. Thomas Hanna redefined the word "Somatics" which comes from the Greek word "Soma" meaning "the living body". After years of working with the human body and movement, Dr. Hanna redefined "Soma" as the integrated mind and body experienced from within. Through this awareness, we can increase the speed at which messages are communicated between the brain and muscle. He also challenged the myth of aging. He suggested that we have the ability to become wiser and more comfortable in our bodies as we age.
In Hanna Somatics, the term "sensory motor amnesia" refers to an involuntary response to stress that convinces the brain it cannot perform a function. In truth, the brain has merely forgotten how to perform. Hanna Somatics assists the brain in creating new patterns for efficient and healthy muscle memory.
Hanna Somatics is unique from other physical rehabilitative therapies because the client is actively participating in an educational experience.
The sessions are cumulative. At the end of every session, I will give you exercises to do at home in order to maintain your progress and have lasting results.

What is a session like?
Hanna Somatic Educators prefer to call a session a "lesson" because it is an educational experience. We start every lesson by "checking in" with your body's patterns. I will observe how you stand, walk, and how your body arranges itself. The body is a map that highlights areas that would benefit from re-education and attention.
Most of this educational process is done while lying on a massage table. However, we also do movements while sitting, standing, or walking. Somatic lessons are done while wearing loose comfortable clothing.
The first three lessons occur one week apart. They give the "soma" a chance to adjust itself from the center out to the periphery. For example, one lesson involves all the muscles in the back; another lesson involves all the muscles along the sides; and lastly, all the muscles in the front. Each lesson addresses the three main reflexes: The Red Light Reflex, the Green Light Reflex, and the Trauma Reflex.
After the initial three lessons, we hone in on specific muscles or muscle groups that need more attention. The lessons are tailored to fit the needs of each individual.
I also teach Hanna Somatic group and private exploration classes. I incorporate Hanna Somatic exercises, restorative yoga postures, pranayama (focused breathing), meditation, and visualization. For a current class schedule email me or sign up for our newsletter found on the home page.
