What type of massage do I give? I have been trained in the following modalities:
Intuitive/Healing Massage: In this massage I intuitively combine the various techniques I've learned over the past 20 years including: Swedish massage, foot reflexology, aromatherapy, gem layouts, and energy work.
- Swedish Massage uses long smooth gentle strokes, kneading, and circular movements on the superficial layers of muscle. I have trained myself to feel into the subtle layers of the body. I find where your muscles are tense, work into those areas, and invite your body to relax.
- Foot Reflexology is often used in combination with Swedish massage. Reflexology involves
applying pressure to certain points on the foot that correspond to organs and systems in the body.
- Aromatherapy is used to enhance any massage through intuitively selecting high quality essential oils that have been carefully distilled to keep their medicinal qualities. These oils are made from plants, trees, and flowers in single or combination blends. The effects can be far reaching and are intended to be relaxing, energizing, balancing, and stress-reducing.
- Gem Layouts are often used in my massage. I believe that crystals and gems enhance and amplify intentions for healing and alignment. Each mineral or crystal has a specific chemical composition and physical structure that holds a vibrational frequency. Crystals and minerals have been used for healing, energy enhancement, and spiritual development since ancient times.
- Energy Work is used by relating directly to the human energy field (aura) and chakra system. This can be done many ways - either hands on the physical body or off.
The human energy field is the matrix structure upon which the cells of the physical body grow. It is the template for the physical body and is directly connected with health and wellness. If there is a disturbance in the physical body it can also be found in the aura. I have been trained in techniques that can direct the flow of life force energy - or Prana. When the imbalance is changed in the energy field, the body can realign. This speeds up the recovery process (often exponentially).
Deep Tissue/Sports Massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. I use slower strokes and friction techniques across the grain of the muscle using my forearms, elbows, and body weight to add pressure.
Deep tissue/sports massage is often used for chronically tight muscles that are a result of repetitive strain, overuse or from a recovering injury. The focus is on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. It is not uncommon for clients to feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.
Hot Stone Massage uses heated smooth stones of various sizes that are placed on specific points of the body. The stones are incorporated into the sequence of massage strokes so that the warm stones loosen tight muscles and balance the energy centers in the body. The stones enhance the work done by my hands, work deeply into the tissue, and encourage the release of toxins out of the body. My clients report that these techniques and the warmth of the stones are profoundly relaxing and soothing.
Thai Massage is a wonderful technique that is considered a "medical massage" in Thailand. Many people receive it regularly for preventative measures and to maintain vibrant health.
In Thai massage you are fully clothed and laying comfortably on a mat on the floor. This technique includes passive stretching (it is like doing yoga without "you" doing any of the work) and working with pressure points similar to Shiatsu. I use my fingers, with firm pressure, in a rhythmic sequence along the meridians on your body. This improves the flow of energy (Prana) and helps to align all of the body's systems.
Thai massage is very relaxing but can also be more energizing than other forms of massage. It can help you to improve flexibility, range of motion, and promote an overall feeling of well being.
Ayurvedic Massage utilizes ancient techniques from India that use heated herb-infused sesame or coconut oil in specific sequences involving the marma points. These sessions stimulate the subtle nerves (nadis) and energy centers (chakras). This type of massage is a great way to bring the doshas back into balance, purifying and rejuvenating the system.
Pregnancy Massage, also called prenatal massage, is becoming increasingly popular with expectant mothers. I've been trained in the proper way to position and support the woman's body (using pillows and other props) during the massage, and how to modify techniques to keep her comfortable. Pregnancy massage is used to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression.
Lymphatic Massage or lymph drainage massage is a light feathered technique used to manually cleanse and help increase the lymph to flow. Increased lymph flow removes harmful substances from the tissues and increases immune function. Lymphatic massage can be useful in cases of edema, sports injury, or for people suffering from a sluggish immune system and lack of energy.
What can you expect in each massage?
Each session is designed and tailored to fit your individual needs. I suggest that you call me, so we can discuss your preferences and background of receiving massage to find the right fit. Often clients will tell me to use my intuition and allow me to pick and choose for them.
Even with regularly scheduled clients each session is completely different from the previous massage. I view massage as an art form and "ground" into my higher self to find the perfect relationship with you in the present moment.
I like to work in silence and encourage clients to drop into a place of deep meditation. My massage offers you a place to take solace and refuge into deeper states of knowing yourself. I believe when we honor and accept all parts of ourselves we can truly heal. After a massage my clients tell me they feel nurtured, peaceful, and expanded.
My massage can also be used in conjunction with other forms of therapy. I am happy to establish a relationship with your doctor, acupuncturist, or physical therapist in order to support you with your healing "plan".
