At this time I do not have a pool to practice Watsu in San Diego. If you know of a pool that I can use please email me. The pool needs to have adequate consistent pool depth of 3 – 4' and be heated to 96 degrees. Thank you, James
Watsu is an aquatic therapy that combines techniques from massage, shiatsu, Thai Chi, and yoga. Watsu was developed by poet and Zen shiatsu master Harold Dull 25 years ago at Harbin Hot Springs in Northern California.
This unique therapy is relatively new and quickly spreading to healing centers
and five star resorts worldwide. This YouTube
video is an example of me giving
a session in the video to the right of the page. In this non-traditional session
we had the intention to play and find an artful expression of our joy in the
water. Every session is unique and suited to each individual needs.
We share this sacred movement in warm (approximately 96 degrees) saltwater. With floats placed beneath your knees, you are completely supported as I take your body through a series of stretches and movements that are deeply nurturing and profoundly relaxing.
Watsu is a safe way to treat stress related symptoms such as neck and back pain, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and more. Free-floating while being supported gives your body permission to let go and relax. Water takes your body out of gravity, relieves pressure from the vertebrae, and allows the spine to be gently and passively stretched.
Along with physical therapeutic benefits, Watsu also invites you to experience deeper feelings of peace and well-being. People often move into a meditative state where they experience emotional release, restoration, realignment and rejuvenation. Many clients report having profound experiences and insights that change their lives forever.
Things you may experience while receiving Watsu therapy:
- Revealing insight into your life
- Unwinding old patterns of holding or pain
- Healing from past traumas i.e. near drowning experiences and fear of water
- Integrating mind, body, and soul
- Moving out of gravity and into your center
- Suspending and/or having the feeling of transcending time
- Enjoying the feelings of being completely nurtured and supported
Prenatal Watsu Therapy: I specialize in giving Watsu sessions to expectant mothers. Clients in their final trimester find Watsu soothing, relaxing, and nurturing because the warm water provides an environment of weightlessness. In one session, I helped reverse a breach situation by gently turning the mommy over in the water in specific patterns. She later had a normal delivery! Fathers are welcome to participate in the water at the end of each session for building intimacy and deeper family connection.I love feeling the baby kicking and moving! It is quite an honor to hold space and welcome it into life with messages of love and peace.
Location: I offer Watsu at a beautiful outdoor sanctuary in Oceanside, California. Sessions are given in a state of the art "lagoon" that contains water from sacred sites worldwide. The lagoon is approximately 4 feet deep, so people who don't know how to swim feel safe. Evening sessions have a special ambiance with colored fiber optics, tiki torches in the garden, and a fire pit. Friends or lovers often come together, so one can soak in the hot tub or meditate while waiting for their session in the water.
Watsu is a transformative experience in all weather and seasons, even when it is cold and gray outside. Receiving a Watsu treatment is like going on a mini-vacation. It is a good idea not to hurry after a Watsu treatment. You will want to continue relaxing after your session. I recommend journaling and/or meditating afterwards to integrate the session, and do whatever enables you to sustain the feeling of expansion and peace.
Sessions are typically one hour. All you need is a bathing suit and towel. A bathroom is available for changing and showering.
I have been trained by the originator of Watsu ~ Harold Dull at Harbin Hot Springs, CA and by WABA Instructors Alexis Lee and Healing Dance Instructor Theri Thomas (Above and Below) in San Diego, CA.
